Genetics and Response to Medical Treatment

"Why is she responding to the treatment, and not me?"

Every individual has his or her unique genetic makeup. This uniqueness also makes each of us response differently to a same medical treatment, both in terms of treatment effectiveness and the occurrence of side effects.

Molecular signature for personalized treatment

For example, statins are widely prescribed medications for lowering blood cholesterol level. Studies have demonstrated that carriers of certain polymorphic alleles are more likely to develop adverse effect when consuming statins. Carriers of certain polymorphic alleles also response better to the medication than non-carriers. Thus, understanding one’s molecular signature will assist clinicians in prescribing the most suitable treatment.
